JC 1 Chemistry
tuition

Transitioning to H2 Chemistry marks a significant jump in depth and pace from the Secondary or IP level.

Our A Level Chemistry tuition focuses on securing a strong foundation that matches the topics covered in your school’s lectures. Through clear theoretical breakdowns and examples, we help you tackle complex data and application-based questions with clarity.

Key topics covered in JC 1 Chemistry:

  • Mole Concept & Stoichiometry: We equip students with reliable, repeatable solving frameworks for mole calculations, reacting quantities, and formula determination, enabling them to approach even complex multi-step questions such as back titration and combustion data calculations with clarity and consistency.

  • Gaseous State: We simplify gas laws, ideal behaviour, and calculations into step-by-step methods, ensuring students avoid common pitfalls and build strong confidence in handling both conceptual and quantitative exam questions.

  • Atomic Structure: We break down complex atomic models, orbitals, and ionisation energy trends into clear visual frameworks, helping students confidently interpret data and tackle higher-order application and explanation questions with precision.

  • Chemical Bonding: Students learn to connect bonding, molecular shape, and physical properties using structured answer templates and guided explanations - a critical skill for explaining questions clearly and scoring consistently in A-Level exams.

  • Acids & Bases: Students are trained to recognise question types instantly across different acid-base theories, applying the correct framework systematically to answer confidently, accurately, and efficiently under timed exam conditions.

  • Reaction Kinetics: Students learn to interpret experimental data, construct rate equations, and analyse reaction mechanisms using clear step-by-step strategies, enabling them to confidently handle application-heavy and unfamiliar exam questions.

  • Chemical Energetics: Abstract energy concepts are broken into clear, structured steps, helping students visualise enthalpy changes, apply Hess cycles confidently, and tackle data-based and explanation questions with stronger accuracy. Links are also drawn to earlier topics such as Chemical Bonding so that students are able to see how topics relate to each other and concepts taught may be quantified

  • Chemical Equilibrium: We train students to think logically about equilibrium systems, predict shifts accurately through the use of Le Chatelier’s Principle, and apply structured solving methods to complex Kc and Kp calculations with clarity, speed, and precision.

  • Periodic Table: Instead of memorising trends, students learn systematic comparison techniques and underlying principles, allowing them to explain patterns clearly, make accurate predictions, and handle unfamiliar exam questions with confidence.

JC 2 Chemistry tuition

As the A-Level Chem exams approach, our H2 Chemistry tuition shifts to integrating concepts across multiple topics and helping you master higher-level problem-solving. Lessons will emphasise structured answering techniques and tackling data-based and common A-Level question types.

Through targeted practices and mock papers, students are guided in analysing challenging questions from past papers, avoiding common mistakes, and explaining chemical concepts using precise scientific reasoning. This also helps students develop clear, well-structured answers while building the accuracy, time management, and exam strategies needed for full exam readiness.

Key topics covered in JC 2 Chemistry:

  • Acid-Base Equilibria: From pH calculations to buffer systems, students master key concepts through simplified frameworks, allowing them to approach pH calculation and titration curve questions methodically and perform accurately even under exam pressure.

  • Solubility Equilibria: We break down Ksp concepts, common ion effects, and solubility calculations into manageable steps, helping students confidently predict outcomes and handle challenging, unfamiliar scenarios effectively.

  • Electrochemistry: Building on their secondary school knowledge, students learn to analyse redox processes, predict feasibility using electrode potentials, and apply structured methods for calculations, enabling clear understanding and strong performance in both theory and application questions.

  • Organic Chemistry (Foundations & Mechanisms): Students learn functional groups, reaction types, and mechanisms through pattern recognition and structured explanation methods, helping them connect concepts across topics and avoid overwhelming memorisation.

  • Hydrocarbons: We guide students through mechanisms such as free radical substitution and electrophilic addition reactions using clear stepwise breakdowns, enabling them to confidently predict products, understand mechanisms, and explain reactions accurately in exams.

  • Halogenoalkanes: Students learn nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions through structured comparisons of SN1 and SN2 mechanisms, allowing them to quickly identify conditions and apply concepts correctly in exam questions. We will also draw links to earlier topics such as Reaction Kinetics which will allow students to see how earlier concepts they have mastered may be applied in another context.

  • Alcohols & Phenols: We emphasise key reactions, oxidation pathways, and acidity through connected understanding across topics, helping students apply knowledge flexibly instead of memorising isolated reactions.

  • Carbonyl Compounds: Students master aldehydes and ketones through simplified mechanism breakdowns, enabling them to confidently handle nucleophilic addition reactions and structured identification questions.

  • Carboxylic Acids & Derivatives: We connect reaction pathways across acids, esters, and acyl chlorides, helping students understand transformations deeply and apply concepts confidently rather than relying on memorisation.

  • Nitrogen Compounds: Students explore amines, amides, and proteins through clear concept links and reaction patterns, enabling strong understanding of both theoretical concepts and real-world biological relevance.

  • Transition Elements: We simplify d-block chemistry using visual and logical explanations, helping students understand variable oxidation states, coloured complexes, and catalytic behaviour without relying on rote memorisation.

"Back in school, i always use to look forward to Mr Chans class. I used to have the common stereotype that chemistry is boring with so many equations and formulas to remember. I couldnt have been more wrong!Mr Chan somehow manages to turn all his lessons into an exciting learning adventure, truly making chemistry come alive in front of all of us fortunate to be under him! Even if we do not immediately grasp certain concepts explained, he would take the extra time to go through them personally till we understand the concepts fully!Besides being an amazing teacher, Mr Chan is an exceptional person and role model. I can firmly say that being in his class has made me a better person and has shaped me to who i am today. So definitely do hit him up and watch the magic of chemistry come alive! Anyone would be privileged to have been taught by him."

"All of us who have been taught by Mr Chan would agree that his learning materials and teaching expertise is nothing short of outstanding. But what makes Mr Chan such an exceptional educator is his unrelenting adaptability and patience. Even in my most clueless of times, Mr Chan never showed any signs of irritation or frustration, instead doing everything in his power to guide me through whatever I was having troubles with. Mr Chan would never give up on any of his students, and invariably makes himself available for any of us to approach him with any doubts. With his frequent encouragements, Mr Chan was able to help every single one of us, regardless of academic standard, build our confidence, making us always feel comfortable to ask for help. I would like to especially recommend Mr Chan for his IB EE and IA mentorship, for I attribute much of my successes in these projects to him. Under Mr Chan’s unfaltering guidance throughout my 2 years of IB, I managed to score a 92 for HL chemistry, as well as an A for my chemistry EE."
