International Baccalaureate (IB) English Tuition

IB English Language and Literature requires students to engage with texts at a deeper level, going beyond surface understanding to analyse how meaning is constructed across both literary and non-literary forms.

Students are expected to interpret and evaluate ideas, synthesise perspectives across different texts and contexts, and communicate their analysis clearly and effectively. Our IB English tuition programme is designed to support Year 5 and Year 6 students in developing these core skills, while preparing them to approach internal and external assessments with clarity and confidence.

Curriculum and lesson material booklets designed to support IB learning outcomes and core skills
Small group lessons for in-depth coverage while ensuring individualised attention per student
Lessons recorded and shared with students for personal revision at their own time

Comprehensive IB English Tuition for Year 5 to 6 Students

Our curriculum for IB English and IB Literature tuition in Singapore has been prepped by tutors with years of experience with the IB assessment requirements. Our lessons are delivered in small groups that allow them to provide more nuanced guidance, whether you’re with an IB Language A: Literature HL tutor or an IB Language A: Literature SL tutor.

This approach keeps every one of our lessons locked onto the latest IB learning outcomes. We’ll help you take on the increasingly advanced curricula of Y5/Y6 with confidence.

IB Year 5 English Tuition

In Year 5, we transition from foundational concepts to the analytical demands of the IB curriculum. Tutors will help you strengthen your core understanding of the language through clear and structured examples.

Complex texts and global themes will be demystified, and you’ll also get to practise interpreting nuanced linguistic information, helping to build foundations for handling application-based questions in your next evaluations.

Key topics covered in IB Year 5 English:

  • Basics of literary and visual analysis, with an eye towards both the macro (observing themes, characterisation, and structure), and the micro (diction, syntax, imagery)

  • Beginnings of argument formulation, from understanding a question and identifying its keywords, to creating topic sentence skeletons following clear simple structures.

  • Executing analytical writing with consistent structural components across both Paper 1, Paper 2, the Individual Oral, and (for HLs), the Higher Level Essay.

  • Building comprehension, and subsequently, familiarity and expertise with school literary texts through short extracts and writing drills.

IB Year 6 English Tuition

In Year 6, the focus of our IB English tuition shifts towards integrating complex global themes across texts and optics. We move from simple comprehension to analytical reasoning.

Tutors will provide a structured approach for tackling the higher-order questions often seen in IP assessments. We’ll refine your ability for breaking down the language, ensuring you can navigate even the most challenging components in future assessments.

Key topics covered in IB Year 6 English

  • Moving from singular text analysis to comparative analysis, with an overview of the challenging Paper 2 structure.

  • Laying the foundations for comparative analysis, building students’ ability to compare both ideas, and techniques

  • Moving analysis beyond literary and visual devices, with special attention to genre-specific devices, for plays, poetry, prose, and beyond.

  • Perfecting topic sentences and thesis statements under timed conditions.

  • Repetitive writing drills with regular feedback, allowing students to practice writing high-quality work while under time stress.

“Mr Chan was my chemistry teacher in ACSI for IB. His lessons were always enjoyable and something I would look forward to because of how structured and organised they are. Approachable and friendly, Mr Chan is open to all questions and will try his best to answer them in a way that every student is able to understand. He ensures that our doubts are clarified and is extremely encouraging and patient, especially to any students whom he notices may be struggling. As my EE mentor, Mr Chan was definitely willing to provide any assistance along the way and would often check in for updates. I appreciate how he is going the extra mile for his students, even working after hours to give his best. With such dedication, I definitely recommend Mr Chan to those who are looking to improve on their Chemistry!”

“I was taught chemistry by Mr. Chan when I was doing my IB program in ACS(I). Mr. Chan is an outstanding chemistry teacher - patient, kind and supportive. Under Mr. Chan's excellent teaching and guidance, I managed to score 7 for my IB exams. Mr. Chan's lessons were consistently engaging and interesting. With the ability to simplify complex concepts and break them down into more manageable parts, Mr. Chan helped me to grasp challenging concepts with ease. He was always willing to go the extra mile to provide additional resources and support us outside of class hours. Now in medical school, I routinely use chemistry concepts taught to me by Mr. Chan. I am very grateful to have had Mr. Chan as my chemistry teacher, and would highly recommend him to any student struggling with chemistry / wanting to do better in IB or A levels."

“My name is Rudy and I graduated from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) in 2020. Mr Chan taught me during both of my IB years.
Initially, I struggled with Chemistry and often scored low grade 4s. However, with Mr Chan’s guidance and teaching, I managed to improve and eventually attain a grade 6 for my IB exams.Mr Chan is very innovative with his lessons. He keeps always keeps his lessons engaging. For example, for lessons about molecular structure and bonding, Mr Chan brought 3-D figures to help us visualise and understand the topic better. On other days, he would show us informative yet entertaining videos. Even when his lessons were at the end of a long school day, I have always looked forward to and enjoyed them. One of things that I found the most helpful were Mr Chan’s one to one consults. Despite the constraints of the pandemic, which was at its peak during that time, I was able to have virtual consults with Mr Chan to clarify all the doubts I had leading up to the exams. It helped me realise what were my weaknesses and gaps in my knowledge, which helped me to revise and prepare better. Mr Chan is very supportive and encouraging towards his students. Not only has he taught me lessons inside the classroom, but he has also taught me lessons of life that I continue to apply each day."

"Mr Chan taught me IB Chem in ACS(Independent) from 2019-2020, and I got 7 for the subject! Patient and concise, his lessons are always informative and he will definitely guide you to the best of his abilities. Mr Chan takes his teaching very seriously, as seen by his bank of resources that ranges from recorded videos and summary of topics etc.
His teaching style is also more friendly and sincere, rather than stern and disciplinarian. Mr Chan has guided me in my chem report writings in school, and these contributed to the grade 7 I got at the end. I highly recommend Mr Chan to any student who needs that boost to secure your desired grade!"

"Mr Chan was my chemistry teacher for 2 years (year 5 & 6) in ACS Independent. With Mr Chan’s guidance and support, I scored a Grade 7 in HL Chemistry for the 2020 IB examinations. To facilitate our learning and understanding of concepts, Mr Chan provided us with additional resources besides those provided by the school such as extra online quizzes. Additionally, Mr Chan also prepared concise summaries of each topic which helped to clarify any misconceptions we had! On top of this, Mr Chan also created a positive learning environment for us. He was extremely patient and receptive to any questions or feedback that we had! Furthermore Mr Chan’s classes were extremely engaging and interactive. He always made an extra effort to ensure that classes were as interesting and fun as possible. I throughly enjoyed Mr Chan’s classes, thank you Mr Chan!"

"Under Mr Chan’s excellent teaching and guidance, I managed to score a Grade 7 for IB HL Chemistry. Mr Chan was my teacher from Year 5 to 6 at ACS(Independent). I found his lessons extremely engaging and he always ensured that we were able to understand the various Chemistry concepts. He would also meet up for consultations when possible, which was very beneficial for clearing any doubts I had. Despite the various COVID restrictions, Mr Chan tried his best to ensure that we had sufficient resources while studying at home. His recorded videos were very useful in helping me revise for my exams. Mr Chan was also a very dedicated teacher and strove to help each of us reach our best potentials. Furthermore, he wrote my medical school admissions testimonial, which impressed my interviewer. Mr Chan is definitely an excellent teacher who strives to help his students foremost."

"Mr Chan is one of the most passionate and best teachers in terms of his pedagogy. He takes the time to explain to students concepts in a way that they are able to understand, and he uses analogies to help students better conceptualise the information that might be more abstract  especially in Chemistry where it is difficult to draw a relation to how it might be significant in our every day life. He makes Chemistry much more interesting by tapping on the students' intrinsic curiosity to learn more about things that may be relevant to them, and he makes lessons much more enjoyable by getting to know you on a personal level and be interested in the things that you are involved in. His recorded videos of chemistry lab experiments, and 3-dimensional models of the atomic structure, draw on our ability to better visualise pictorial information rather than seem textual information, and he also tells a lot of jokes to make the students laugh which makes his classes much more enjoyable. Close to the exams, he is also very focused on helping you score well for the tests, and gives excellent summaries on commonly-tested but hard-to-grasp topics.   However more than that, he instills skills that are much more valuable beyond just exam-taking, which is to understand before memorising, and to always see the big-picture in whichever concepts he is teaching. I am confident that Mr Chan will be able to teach anybody Chemistry given his teaching style, immense patience, and comprehensive understanding of Chemistry concepts, and I would definitely recommend him as a teacher."

"I was a student of ACS (Independent) where Mr Chan was my Chemistry teacher for 2 years and helped me attain a 7 point grade in IB HL Chemistry!
As a teacher, Mr Chan is extremely approachable and makes his lessons entertaining and engaging! His classes are well organised and he is able to teach even the most abstract of chemistry concepts in a way that is easily understood. His revision lessons of each concepts just before our IB exams really helped us identify the important concepts of each chapter and practice answering questions on them.
He goes above and beyond what is expected of a teacher and does his best to help his students even after graduation! He is an inspiration to me to say the least!"

"All of us who have been taught by Mr Chan would agree that his learning materials and teaching expertise is nothing short of outstanding. But what makes Mr Chan such an exceptional educator is his unrelenting adaptability and patience. Even in my most clueless of times, Mr Chan never showed any signs of irritation or frustration, instead doing everything in his power to guide me through whatever I was having troubles with. Mr Chan would never give up on any of his students, and invariably makes himself available for any of us to approach him with any doubts. With his frequent encouragements, Mr Chan was able to help every single one of us, regardless of academic standard, build our confidence, making us always feel comfortable to ask for help. I would like to especially recommend Mr Chan for his IB EE and IA mentorship, for I attribute much of my successes in these projects to him. Under Mr Chan’s unfaltering guidance throughout my 2 years of IB, I managed to score a 92 for HL chemistry, as well as an A for my chemistry EE."
